Real Estate Brokers Program

Any real estate industry member applying to the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) for a broker or associate broker licence must have documented two (2) years of licensed experience as a real estate associate within the five (5) years preceding the application for the licence. Completion of the Real Estate Brokers Program (REBP) requires five (5) core courses and one (1) of three (3) elective courses before writing the provincial qualifying examination which is based on the five core courses. The entire REBP must be completed within two (2) years.

Core Courses:

Real Estate Brokerage
• 2-days (12 classroom hours) plus 2-hour exam
Real Estate Brokerage focuses on the legal framework within which all real estate practitioners must work.

Real Estate Law
• 4-days (24 classroom hours) plus 2-hour exam
Real Estate Law addresses areas of law that can affect the operation of a real estate business as well as the duties, responsibilities and liabilities of the real estate agent.

Real Estate Mortgage Financing
• 2-days (12 classroom hours) plus 2-hour exam
Real Estate Mortgage Financing provides an update on factors affecting current mortgage market conditions.

Real Estate Office Administration
• 4-days (24 classroom hours) plus 2-hour exam
Real Estate Office Administration introduces strategies for planning and operating an effective and efficient office that complies with the requirements of the Real Estate Act.

Real Estate Principles of Appraisal
• 3-days (18 classroom hours) plus 2-hour exam
Real Estate Principles of Appraisal introduces basic appraisal theory and principles as a foundation for the completion of accurate estimates of value.

Elective Courses:

Commercial Real Estate
• 2-days (12 classroom hours) plus 2-hour exam
Commercial Real Estate introduces the specialized nature of dealing with industrial, commercial and investment properties.

Property Management
• 4-days (24 classroom hours) plus 2-hour exam
Property Management provides an introduction to the scope of practice of property managers including specifics related to leases, policies and procedures, budgets, administration, insurance and maintenance.

Rural Real Estate
• 2-days (12 classroom hours) plus 2-hour exam
Rural Real Estate provides a basis for understanding the scope of rural real estate, including analysis of land productivity, approaches to determining rural land value, legal considerations and change of use.
