On June 20, Kourtney Rylands officially became a homeowner for the first time finalizing the purchase of a condo in Mission. Hours later her new condo, furniture and many of her belongings would be submerged in more than five feet of water.

"It looked like a storm went through," she said of seeing her home for the first time after the flood. "It ripped the cabinets off the walls, it took my island and put it vertical, the beds were upside down — I don't know how that happened, they must of floated and flipped over or something.

Calgary has lifted its state of emergency as of 10:16 a.m. this morning.

While the state of emergency — first declared June 20 — has been lifted, the Municipal Emergency Plan (MEP) remains in effect as recovery and relief efforts continue. Under the MEP, the Calgary Emergency Management Agency and other partners will continue to co-ordinate recovery and relief efforts resulting from flooding.

Following the floods that wreaked havoc on so many Calgary homes, the damage is obvious. Streets lined with soggy drywall and waterlogged flooring are visible proof of how widespread the damage was.

But for some the damage was less apparent. On the edges of the floodwaters, the impact may have consisted nothing more than a damp carpet. However, despite appearances, residents should take care to ensure there are no potential dangers lurking out of sight.

With literally hundreds of rental units taken off the market in the wake of the recent flooding, Calgary renters could find themselves facing serious issues.

Following a pre-flood report from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) showing the city's vacancy rate fell to just 1.2 per cent in April, many prospective renters are facing a virtually nonexistent market.
