Calgary lake communities are ready for summer, as Alberta approaches full reopening

For residents of Calgary's lake communities, having such a special amenity available during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a blessing. Now, those communities are looking ahead to, hopefully, even better times this summer as the province reopens and restrictions are lifted.

Touted as a neighbourhood that turns back the hands of time, Harmony aims to house 10,000 residents

Good community design creates good feelings. It's those good feelings – a sense of connectedness, camaraderie with neighbours, a sense of belonging, and pride of ownership – that drives the must-live-here desire. And that's just what the developers of Harmony, a new sustainable, interactive lake and golf community located in the heart of Springbank, want to evoke.

"With Harmony, what we wanted to do was turn back the hands of time and focus on what community really is," said Birol Fisekci, of Harmony Developments Inc.

Fisekci is also the president and CEO of Bordeaux Properties the co-developer of the project, along with Qualico Communities.

Universal Design creates accessible and inclusive communities

Calgarians are seeing the value of universally designed spaces and inclusive communities. In fact, those close to the issue say that is the key – recognizing that intentional accessibility built in at the initial design phase is the most economical, adaptable and seamlessly integrated approach, rather than including it as an afterthought.

Lefty's legacy: Mickelson National Golf Club is one of Harmony's high notes

While the Smiths were first drawn to Harmony because of its lake access and proximity to the Rockies, a golf course development involving PGA icon Phil Mickelson was the icing on the cake.

"It was a slam dunk when we knew the Mickelson National (Golf Club) was coming in," said Kevin Smith, director of communications for Alberta Golf.

Bungalow buyers

Single-level homes are in high demand among retirees planning for their future

For active senior JoAnn Fetzner, who golfs three times a week and travels widely, one-level, bungalow living was an obvious choice for the rest of her life.

For empty-nester Patti Clarkson, 54, who is easing her way into retirement, her recently purchased bungalow villa will be the perfect "forever home."

For both women, finding a single-level home was a priority – part of their long-term planning for possible mobility issues down the road.
