Homebuilder among finalists for environmental award

Finalists announced for 25th annual Emerald Awards

Mattamy Homes is among 70 organizations and individuals who have been named as finalists as part of the 25th annual Emerald Awards, which recognize environmental excellence in the province.

The homebuilder has been recognized under the Large Business (more than 100 employees) category for its Cityscape community in northeast Calgary.

As part of the federal EcoEnergy Innovation Initiative, Mattamy will build five net-zero homes in CityScape – the first already revealed late last year.

Also nominated was Echo-Logic Land Corp. in the Small Business (less than 100 employees) category for its EchoHaven project in the city. Eco-Logic is a Calgary-based development company specializing in ecologically sustainable housing. EchoHaven is a sustainable 25-home community in the northwest community of Rocky Ridge.

In the Government Institution category, the University of Calgary was recognized for its high-performance green building program, which includes 11 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) buildings and four more waiting for certification. Collectively, the program has been able to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 14,700 tonnes annually, as well as keep 14,500 tonnes of waste out of the landfill.

The annual awards are organized by the Alberta Emerald Foundation. Winners will be announced June 8.
