HGTV Canada star and gardening guru Carson Arthur shares tips from his latest book at the Calgary Home + Garden Show

Gardening expert and HGTV Canada's Home to Win host Carson Arthur has had a busy few months. He's launched a new book; is in the process of opening a destination-style gardening centre in Prince Edward County, Ont., with a focus on food diversity and fun; and through it all, he has been working long hours filming the latest season of Home to Win.

But his busy schedule hasn't stopped him from taking part in the Calgary Home + Garden Show this weekend, where he will be sharing a bevy of tips from his new book, Vegetables, Chickens and Bees: The Art of Growing Food Anywhere. It's an easy-to-read, comprehensive farm-to-table gardening guide, chock-full of information that includes some of Arthur's own fresh-food recipes.

He'll also be imparting landscaping wisdom, sharing tips that work in the homeowner's favour when it comes to resale.
"Adding a deck or patio will increase the value of your home between eight and 12 per cent." - Carson Arthur

"I'm really going to be talking about preserving the value of your property and how outdoor renovations really impact the dollars and cents of your property value," said Arthur. "People are always asking me, 'should I be going patio or deck? What kinds of materials should I be using?'

"Adding a deck or patio will increase the value of your home between eight and 12 per cent. Once the deck is in, that is when you can look at trees and shrubs."

He notes that the pendulum is swinging from no-maintenance lawns and gardens to lusher landscaping. Thanks to the millennial generation, growing food – whether it's on a rooftop, a balcony or in raised beds – is back in fashion, and that means saying hello to fruit trees and greenery.

Carson Arthur will be presenting on the Calgary Home + Garden Show main stage Friday, March 1 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, March 2 at noon & 5 p.m. For more information, or to buy tickets online and save $2, visit www.calgaryhgs.com.
