After an unusual spring spent mostly cooped up inside, summer's onset promises brighter days.

Summer is also a great time to notice the areas around the home that are especially in need of a refresh. This is where Alykhan Velji, principal at Alykhan Velji Designs, is focused for summer 2020.

"The spaces that we tend to forget about but once you put the focus on them, you can really get the full benefit of using them," he said.

"It is all about keeping it light, fresh and working with what you have . . . Play with patterns and colours, and just have fun!"

Front-door glory

Velji says curb appeal is key to a welcoming home.

"I have always loved a brightly painted door or a door that has some impact," he said. "The possibilities are endless when it comes to exterior doors, with full glass, paned glass, side lights, etc."

The new door should suit the home's existing style to maintain flow and consistency throughout its exterior. If a new door doesn't fit within the budget, a little paint goes a long way.

"Choose something bright and bold so it makes an impact," said Velji. "Remember it is just paint and you can always paint over it."

Make an entrance

Often forgotten and packed with clutter, entryways can become beautiful, welcoming spaces.

"There are a few key steps to making an entryway sing," said Velji.

First, flooring: "If you have the budget for new floors, go with a gorgeous patterned tile for some drama. [It's] durable and easy to clean," said Velji. "An area rug can also do the trick. Go with something washable that has lots of pattern so it can hide the dirt."

Second, lighting: "You want to ensure there is ample lighting in your entryway," said Velji. "A gorgeous chandelier is perfect to make an entrance. Again, keep in the mind the style of your home to keep it consistent."

Third, furniture: "An entry table is a must if you have the room. This is a great way to ground a mirror and have a place to throw keys," said Velji. "Stools or a bench are also great to have a place to perch while you put on your shoes. These can have a decorative touch to add some colour to the space."

Contrast is key

Velji says contrast is the No. 1 trend in design right now, as well as one of design's biggest rules.

"No matter which room, we are seeing bold contrasting colours being used," he said. "Contrast creates drama in a space and helps it come to life."

He suggests pairing dark cabinets with light countertops, using a different colour for your kitchen island and/or displaying contrasting artwork.

Home-office overhaul

Finally, as working from home has become the norm for many people, it's no surprise the home office is a hot space for design. The key is to avoid a commercial look and opt for a comfortable, inviting feel.

"Simple built-in desks with floating shelves allow for display," said Velji. "Wallpaper is a great introduction for some pattern and multi-functional furniture pieces that allow for guests are always a good thing."
