Sustainable splendour

Artesia in Heritage Pointe merges luxury and landscape

Ordinarily, luxury and sustainability are not exactly two peas in a pod. However, Artesia at Heritage Pointe is no ordinary community. Situated just outside Calgary city limits south of the Bow River, the development combines urban and rural living, offering more space to roam, less maintenance and a tremendous sense of community, not to mention spectacular views.

"Our vision is to create a lifestyle community in the Heritage Pointe tradition that functions in tandem with the natural landscape and focuses on sustainability," said Bill MacDonald, project manager for land development at Heritage Pointe Properties.

The cornerstone of Heritage Pointe is the Heritage Pointe Golf Club – a public, 27-hole course that was carved out of former farmland south of Calgary more than 20 years ago.

Course community milestone

Looking back at 25 years of Heritage Pointe

"Lots of people thought we were crazy to build way out here in the boonies," said Carolina Oxtoby about her company's decision to develop a golf-course community on farmland south of Calgary.

It was 27 years ago when the land on Dunbow Road was purchased, and only two years later, the Heritage Pointe Golf Club was born, with big plans in the works for an upscale, country-residential community to complement it.

While initially created as an escape from Calgary’s urban jungle, Heritage Pointe has started to come into its own and become a well-known commodity in the local housing market, say area residents. CREB®Now file photo

Consistent traction

Housing professionals say upscale communities such as Heritage Pointe showing staying power

The lure of the luxury lifestyle is still drawing homebuyers to exclusive communities in and around Calgary despite some challenges in the local economy, say industry professionals.

Albi Homes community manager Amy Koehn notes Artesia in Heritage Point south of the city, for example, "is one of our busiest communities. It's very consistent and there's a lot of traction with the product here."

Koehn cites the community's lower density and larger lot sizes as motivators to buy in upscale communities such as Heritage Pointe.
