Cold calling: Calgary's outdoor rinks provide much-needed outdoor activity option amid COVID-19 restrictions

With pandemic precautions forcing Calgarians to restructure their lives, the city's outdoor spaces have become a hot commodity this winter. Among the spots in highest demand have been the city's many outdoor rinks.

Volunteers put in hundreds of hours of work each year to keep community rinks across the city in tip-top shape for neighbourhood residents of all ages to enjoy.

The people behind the ice: community volunteers make magic, one rink at a time

If Canada had an official sound, it would be the crisp "thwack" of stick meeting puck on a clear winter morning as kids descend on the local outdoor rink. The image is almost magical, but behind that magic are some dedicated volunteers who conjure up the time and dedication to make it happen.

Salute to service: Calgary legion branches are pillars of community

With nearly 270,000 members at 1,400 branches across the country, the Royal Canadian Legion includes everyone from serving or retired members of the Canadian Armed Forces and the RCMP to regular civilians. What they share is a desire to support those who served Canada and a commitment to improving their communities.
