Free: A Good Home

While plenty of household items are available for free these days, the house itself isn't normally one of them. However, thanks to one Calgary couple, a free home is exactly what is up for grabs.

Opting to give away their former home prior to building a new one on the same site, Jason Hastie and his wife Gina placed an ad on Kijiji advertising "Donating our house! Free to a person or family in need" in mid-January.

In Homes We Trust

With housing prices on the rise in most Canadian cities, nearly a quarter of Canadians plan to use their homes as their primary source of income after they leave the workforce, according to the 2014 Sun Life Canadian Unretirement Index. This survey also revealed 17 per cent do not know if their investment in their home will serve as their primary source of income during retirement.

At the same time, 28 per cent of Canadians expect to be retired at 66. Twice that many (56 per cent) are expecting to work past the traditional retirement age, with 65 per cent citing that they will need to.

In High Demand

The number of homes up for sale may have declined, however Calgary's housing market showed no sign of letting up in January.

Undeterred by a four per cent drop in new listings, MLS® sales in the city increased by 17 per cent year-over-year in January. The increase marks the tenth consecutive month of year-over-year increases in Calgary dating back to March of 2013.
