Taking Inventory
Calgary's housing market emerged from February's deep freeze to post some impressive numbers. While keeping active proved to be a difficult task for many Calgarians, with wind chills in the city dropping down to minus 40, activity amongst home buyers and sellers remained brisk.
According to CREB®, 1,854 homes changed owners in February, marking an 8.7 per cent increase over February 2013. While still representing a significant rise in sales, February's gain fell short of the impressive double-digit growth seen in January, when yearover- year sales grew by 17 per cent.

Sales Growth Boosted By Condominium Activity
Calgary, March. 3, 2014 – Following double digit gains last month, sales growth in the city of Calgary totaled 1,854 units, or an 8.68 per cent increase over the same period in 2013. Slower sales growth resulted in a reduction of listings in the single family sector. However, single family sales still totalled 1,230 units, a 1.9 per cent increase over the previous year.
"Demand growth in the single family sector has been restricted by the availability of product," says CREB® Chief Economist Ann-Marie Lurie. "New listings in this sector fell for the second consecutive month, causing further tightening in an already undersupplied market."

The Lights Are Going Out
January 1 saw a mad dash to home improvement stores, drug stores and any business that carries incandescent light bulbs, especially the 60 and 40 watts. The mad dash led to long lines, hoarding hundreds of dollars worth of the now 'illegal' light bulbs. A black market was created, causing people to trade precious metals for this now outlawed commodity.
Ok, maybe not.
