A path for growth

Calgary takes steps to addressing housing and infrastructure challenges

A new development in the northwest community of Varsity will provide affordable housing for Calgarians looking for a home of their own.

Attainable Homes Calgary Corp. (AHCC) and Lexington Development Management have joined forces to create the 26-unit project, made up of both attainable and market-priced units on the corner of Shaganappi Trail and Varsity Drive N.W.

"It's a great spot. It's near the university. It's near shopping centres. It's a great location," said Ward 1 Coun. Ward Sutherland. "It's very rare that we actually get to have these types of land even available, so the community's been very supportive. They voted on it, they support the project and so do I."

Slated for development?

Cedarglen Homes purchases Harvest Hills Golf Course

Despite being purchased by Calgary developer Cedarglen Homes, there are no immediate plans to develop Harvest Hills Golf Course in the city's northeast, officials said.

"Cedarglen purposely didn't draw a plan in advance," said Chris Ollenberger, managing principal for QuantamPlace Developments Ltd., hired by Cedarglen to act as development manager on the project.

"They went with a blank sheet of paper. They knew it would have some questions from the neighbours in the very least, so they wanted to involve them from the start, which I think was the right thing to do."

East Village expansion

New development to bring restaurants, retail to RiverWalk

East Village's historic Simmons Building will soon have a fashionable new neighbour.

A fitting mix of Calgary's past and future, the new project will bring 17,000 to 20,000 square feet of retail and office space to M2 – a quarter-acre lot alongside the Bow River in downtown Calgary.

"M2 is a highly visible site and, even though it's small, it will have a huge presence in East Village," said Kate MacGregor, president of Calgary's XYC Design + Development.

Sibling rivalry

West Village redevelopment taking back seat to twin to the east

With its eastern counterpart the darling of Calgary's development scene, the West Village couldn't be blamed for feeling a bit like a forgotten sibling.

Bounded to the north by the Bow River, to the east by 11th Street SW, to the south by the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks and to the west by Crowchild Trail, the area was once envisioned to be a "transit-oriented, sustainable urban community," yet sits idle as "an auto-oriented brownfield site."
