Calgarians impacted by June flooding gathered in the community of Sunnyside Aug. 5 for a flood recovery information session organized by the City.

After the scale of damage caused by flooding throughout southern Alberta, the provincial government appointed an advisory panel on community flood mitigation to provide direct input on the latest flood prevention technology from around the world.

Government to Compensate Floodway Homes

The Redford government is giving homeowners living in floodways in Southern Alberta the option to relocate their families.

Affected homeowners are eligible for compensation valued at 100 per cent of their last municipal property tax assessment to help them relocate.

Government Changes Course

Calgary's REALTORS® are welcoming the province's decision to back down on its "rash" decision to require mandatory warnings on land titles for properties in areas at risk for flooding.

"They weren't in a position to make any decisions," said CREB® President Becky Walters. "So why somebody decided to come out with that kind of a rash announcement was really just a reaction to the capacity they were dealing with at that point, and somebody said 'What about the future?'

New Standards for Building and Repair Funding

Albertans affected by the recent floods in the province now have a better idea about funding they'll receive from the government.

As outlined in a release from the Redford government, Albertans living in flood-fringe areas will receive an average of $10,000 to renovate or rebuild their flood-damaged homes.
