Test Your Knowledge: Recycling in Calgary

Calgary is a city that loves its recycling. Before the City introduced a blue cart curbside program in 2009, 40,000 tonnes of recyclables were taken to local depots, by 2010 that number grew almost twofold to 70,000 tonnes. In the years following, the City has introduced a composting green bin pilot program and is in the process of making recommendations to council for a multi-family recycling strategy to meet the recycling needs of all Calgarians. How much do you know?

Those quick thrill decorating shows and design magazines are fun to look at but for most of us, decorating a home is a much longer process. Read further for tips on planning and decorating your home with thought to budget, quality and longevity.

Dabbling in the Garden

When I saw the tomatoes flopping over in the greenhouse, I went to grab a roll of string to hold them back. On my way to find the string, I saw the wilting mint and decided I should plant it in the ground, so I went to get my favourite transplant spade. My husband admitted to leaving the spade out front in the new pumpkin patch. When I got the spade, I spotted a nest of emerging baby spiders on a hosta leaf so went indoors to get my camera. In case you're at a loss — there is definitely a lot of dabbling in garden this week.

The Kindest Cut

No one does any pruning in the wild. Not unless you consider the effects of high winds and branches ripped off by moose-in-rut pruning. But the city is a different kind of place. We have small spaces and big dreams. We want tidy even if our stated goal is low maintenance.

So the conversation eventually comes around to pruning. "This sounds like marriage therapy" called out a heckler at a talk I was giving earlier this month.
