Renovating on a New Island

Kitchens came in top at 39, followed by bathrooms (35%), basements (16%), while bedrooms and family rooms nationwide were less apt to undergo renovations in the next year at 11 and 10 per cent respectively.

With concerns regarding household debt on the rise, it appears that Canadians are being choosier how they spend their renovation dollars.

How to: Organize Your Closet

• Empty out the closet. Place all your clothes, shoes and accessories in plain sight (e.g. lay them on the bed), go through them and set aside anything that might be out of style or that you just don't where anymore to take to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army.

• When returning things to the closet, www.apartmenttherapy.com suggests storing your most used items in plain sight, storing lesser-used items on the floor or lower shelves and placing your least-used items higher up. Depending on the season, you'll want to switch out warm sweaters and long-sleeves for tank tops and shorts so they're easily within reach.

From Brownfield to Brownstone

When browsing through the list of Calgary communities, envisioning how many of them were named isn't the easiest of endeavors. Rarely tying back to any physical idea or origin, the names are normally as pleasant as they are intangible.

Sales on the March

It appears the weather isn't the only thing taking a turn for the better lately, as Calgary's real estate picture brightened considerably in March. According to CREB®, residential sales in the city continued to rise last month, reaching 2,167 units, an increase of 12.6 per cent over last March.

After the first quarter of 2012, sales are up by 7.3 per cent over the same time last year. While the increase is significant, when compared to historic activity, residential sales continue to remain below the long-term trend. Monthly new listings remain slightly lower than last year, whereas year-to-date figures show 7.2 per cent fewer listings have come onto the market in the first quarter of this year.
