Pop Up Places Program to Perk up Vacant Lots

Some neglected lots around the city could be getting a bit of a facelift thanks to a little reorganization at The City of Calgary.

Vacant land or underutilized spaces in Calgary have the potential to be transformed into vibrant places – which the City is dubbing "Pop up Places" – that add to community vitality such as parks, plazas, markets and art exhibits.

Go West

Calgary's long-awaited west LRT line will transform the neighbourhoods that border its eight-kilometre stretch – and mostly for the better, city officials say.

Scheduled to open in early 2013 after first being approved in 1988, the $1.4 billion project will bring LRT service to an area of the city expected to grow from its current population of 105,000 to approximately 120,000 in the next 20 years.

The car sharing initiative car2go, a subsidiary of Daimler North America Corporation — that got its start in Austin, Texas — launched July 21, across the city 150 lowemission smart cars are available for Calgarians on the go.

Pilot Program for Pathway Safety

Calgarians will now have the ability to keep better track of their journey along some of the City's pathways in the instance they should need to call for emergency assistance.

Public Safety Communications has announced the launch of a pilot program which places pathway markers along Centre City/Bow River, the Elbow River pathways and in Fish Creek Park.

A Century Celebration on Centre Street

Spanning almost a century, Calgary's Centre Street Bridge Nears 100th Anniversary

Constructed at a cost of $365,000 in 1916, to replace the old steel truss MacArthur Bridge that was destroyed in a flood, Calgary's Centre Street Bridge has linked the city's north and south for nearly a century.
