While the Calgary Fire Department encourages developing a home safety plan at any time of the year, Fire Prevention Week provides an opportunity to practice that escape plan, refresh a current plan or to create a new one to ensure everyone gets out safe and sound.

Nenshi Talking Cuts to "Sprawl Subsidy"

Mayor Naheed Nenshi may have his work cut out for him in his bid to end Calgary's "sprawl subsidy" by increasing suburban developer levies.

Calling for an end to what he calls a developer "subsidy" that amounts to $4,800 for every new suburban home built in the city, Nenshi has laid out his arguments against the current agreement between the city and suburban developers.

September Sales Stay Strong

Calgary, Oct. 1, 2013 – City of Calgary residential sales totaled 1,923 units in September, 19 per cent higher than last year and 14 per cent higher than long-term averages for the month.

While sales activity over the past three months has been above long-term trends, it was less so in September than in July and August.

Quarterly Sales Record in Surrounding Towns

The significant decline in resale activity in High River in the most recent quarter was not enough to reverse the gains made by other surrounding towns. In fact, overall residential town sales totaled 1,288 units, 22 per cent higher than Q3 2012.

The Alberta Advantage

The temperatures around Calgary might be getting chillier, but the numbers coming out of the city's real estate industry are anything but.

Emphasized by recent numbers that show population growth in Alberta is nearly triple the Canadian average, MLS® sales in the city were up by nearly 20 per cent from a year ago.
