This spring promises to bring changes to both Calgary's natural and built landscapes, as two new developments from Qualico Communities sprout up in some of the most desirable areas of the city.

Together Ambleton in the northwest and Alpine Park (temporary name) in the southwest will see 6,500 to 7,200 new residents and are at various stages of planning and construction approvals, says Clark Piechotta, Qualico's associate director of development.

Gardening is easier in the southwest, where the climate is mellow

Are you a north-side person in Calgary or a south-side holdout? I have lived all over the city and surrounding areas, including Airdrie, Riverbend, Ramsay, Valley Ridge, Rideau Park and Spruce Cliff, and I make it to many more communities around the city during my travels for work.

During all this moving, there is one thing that I've noticed. If you are a gardener, life in the south is simpler: less wind, less frost, less killer hail and more heat, as elevations drop and the climate gradually mellows. In the southwest, the climate is softer and the garden living is easy.

New southwest community by Mattamy to house up to 12,000 people

Come spring, the landscape of Calgary's deep southwest will be undergoing another change, this one being sculpted by Mattamy Homes.

With the snow gone, grading and storm pond construction is expected to get started on the new community of Yorkville, located over more than 190 hectares along the southern boundary of Silverado and moving further south and west.

Construction to start in September

The City of Calgary has unveiled the final design for a new $13-million pedestrian bridge over Macloed Trail by 61st Avenue S.W.

The new bridge will include accessibility features such as elevators and escalators, have a covered four-metre walkway and a connection directly into the second level of Chinook Centre.

According to the City, the overpass will create a safe, accessible and convenient crossing for the more than 2,000 pedestrians that cross over Macleod Trail every day.

An information session is being held tonight for Providence, an area in the city's southwest where new communities are being planned.

Providence is located at the future intersection of the Southwest Ring Road and 146 Ave. S.W. The area encompasses 789-hectares of undeveloped agriculture land with plans for residential, retail and other employment uses.
