Wonder of wallpaper
Add personality to your home through wall coverings
Once a sign of a bygone era, wallpaper has re-emerged as a creative way of adding a touch of luxury to the home.
"Wallpaper adds a texture and design that can't be achieved through paint or even art by covering such a large surface area," said Krystle Wilk, store manager with Southpointe Paint and Décor in the southeast.
"Depending on the space, wallpaper will make a room feel complete. Whereas if there was nothing added, the room would just look good, not great."

Luxury feature: Lights, camera, action!
Indulge in the big-cinema feel from home with a personal home theatre
Whether you want to indulge in the brilliant colours of Gone With the Wind, storm the beaches of Normandy with Saving Private Ryan, or tickle your funny bone with a classic like Animal House, indulging in a home theatre can be just the ticket.
In a survey by Coldwell Banker, home theatres ranked sixth on the list of most important amenity in the home, following open-floor plans, home automation, pools, outdoor kitchens and home gyms. The importance of home theatres jumped 23 per cent for people under the age of 55, according to the survey.

Luxury feature: Superior selection
Increased listings allow for more variety when buying in the luxury market
Gizella Davis has been through this all before.
The 38-year real estate veteran with Royal Lepage Foothills has lived through the peaks and valleys of Calgary's inherently cyclical housing market – including the most recent, which has felt the full force of a downturn in oil prices.
Yet from experience, she's "not concerned one bit" about how the industry – in particular the luxury housing segment – will react long term.

Grocery store gardening
Get growing from plant parts this month
I grew my first crop of sweet potatoes, turmeric and ginger in 2014. They were great until a crash-and-burn disaster, but I am committed to trying again this year.
It is impossible to buy sweet potato seed because they only grow from clones or cuttings. And while turmeric and ginger are available from seed, they are not easy to germinate.
All three crops are better started from plant parts, so I am calling this gardening project my grocery store garden.

PTQ: Wayne Copeland, CHBA-Calgary Region
Not only is Wayne Copeland the president of the Canadian Home Builders' Association - Calgary Region, he's also a hockey coach and die-hard Flames fan. Copeland took some time out of his busy schedule to chat with CREBNow about oil prices affecting the city, a potential merger between CHBA and the Urban Development Institute (UDI) and what Calgary's best-kept secret has to do with Edmonton.
CN: How has the price of oil affected Calgary's new home industry?
WC: Certainly, it has affected us. When consumers hear anything negative, they curtail their confidence in spending rather quickly. Sales in January were off from recent years, but we remain optimistic as we are also hearing that showhome traffic has maintained a decent pace.
We understand that consumers will be a little slower in making large purchases but that does not mean that they have stopped buying altogether. I do believe that it is still too early to make any assumptions of what our economy will look like for this year, but we are definitely keeping our eyes on the energy market.

Recycling series: Alberta's electronics recycling program wants your outdated gadgets
Everyone has them. They gather in closets, basements, attics and garages. Their usefulness long surpassed by newer, shinier versions of themselves, they sit silently, collecting dust.
They are old electronics. Be it a computer, copier, television or VCR, everyone seems to have at least one outdated electronic device residing in their home.

Waiting may be more expensive than buying now
Low interest rates are already a deal
Last week was a busy one for Mortgage360. The long weekend and positive housing reports from several sources, including CMHC, seems to have thrust buyers back into the real estate market, with many of our clients writing offers.
While some buyers are sensing the market is calmer than many of the over-hyped media reports would have you believe, there are still a large number of Calgarians sitting on the sidelines waiting to see how the recent blip in our economy plays out.
What many of these fence-sitters fail to realize, however, is that waiting and seeing could end up costing them more money in the long run, even if prices were to drop 10 to 15 per cent.

They say you can't judge a book by its cover. Yet when it comes to purchasing a home, first impressions can be everything.
"What's really exciting for me right now, especially when it comes to home value, is that landscaping has replaced the top five best return-on-investments according to Remodeling Magazine 2015," said Carson Arthur, co-star of HGTV's Critical Listing and founder of Carson Arthur Design, who will be among a dozen celebrity presenters and more than 650 vendors at the 34th annual Calgary Home + Garden Show, running from Feb. 26 to March 1.
Arthur, who grew up on a farm two hours outside Toronto, said there are a couple simple tips for home sellers when it comes to grabbing the eye of potential buyers.
