Home for the holidays: Local events this December you can't miss

The holidays are just around the corner! Whether you’re planning to enjoy a night at the orchestra, shop for gifts at local Christmas markets, or sip warm, festive drinks, Calgary offers plenty of experiences that capture the spirit of home.

Enchanted Festival at Spruce Meadows | Dec. 5-7, 12-14, 19-24

Check out Spruce Meadows’ lauded décor, including glistening horses, light tunnels and more, and step inside the 36,000 sq. ft. Equi-Plex to warm up with delicious snacks, films, and festive displays.

Calgary Phil Presents Handel's Messiah at Jack Singer Concert Hall | Dec. 4-5

Join conductor Stephen Stubbs, a cast of soloists, and the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus join the Orchestra for this quintessential holiday classic. Handel's beautiful oratorio combines music and drama in one of the greatest stories ever told.

Granary Road’s Christmas Market | Dec. 6-7, 13-14

Embrace the holiday spirit with Christmas carols, decorated trees, lights, and festive photos with Santa and the alpacas at Granary Road’s Christmas Market . All of their Christmas activities, including festive goat yoga and Christmas centrepiece workshops, will be running on Saturdays and Sundays between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Dec. 14

Once Upon a Christmas at Heritage Park | Dec. 6-7, 13-14, 20-23

With fun indoor and outdoor activities, entertainment, and treats that will get you and your family into the holiday cheer—Heritage Park is one of Calgary’s most iconic holiday stops.

Sippin’ Santa at Ricardo’s Hideaway (18+) – Until Dec. 31.

The pop-up bar Sippin’ Santa  runs from 5 p.m. until late. Check out the transformed island bar as it turns into a winter wonderland with limited edition, over-the-top Christmas tiki cocktails.

ZOOLIGHTS at Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo – Until Jan. 4. 

Nothing says Calgary holiday tradition like a visit to Zoolights. With over two million lights and over a 200 displays lighting up the night, as well as fire pits and activity zones, your visit to the zoo will become a visit to Winter Wonderland. 

Outdoor Skating Rinks - Until season closes.

Lace up your skates and get outside for winter fun! The City of Calgary has lots of outdoor skating rink locations that are free to use on a first-come-first-served basis. Currently, some of the city's skating rinks are in early season conditions.
