In the age of COVID-19, connecting with others is a lost art. Thanks to cohousing and a new model that aims to broaden its use, however, that sense of community could return with a vengeance.

When the shuttered King Edward School was transformed into cSPACE King Edward, an incubator for artists, non-profits and entrepreneurs, it proved an ambitious example of the economic, environmental and social benefits of preserving, rather than demolishing, Calgary's historic buildings.

When Mike Bucci completes his Radius condo project in early 2019, it's unlikely to be the end of his company's love affair with The Bridges — a redevelopment in the north inner-city neighbourhood of Bridgeland.

In fact, the vice-president development for Bucci Developments says when the City puts the remaining three parcels of land in the last phase of The Bridges on the market he will be first in line to buy.

"We're calling the City every day telling them we're interested," he said. "We love Bridgeland and it's a pretty special site."

Perched high on the bluff overlooking Deerfoot Trail in Calgary's northeast sits the iconic Calgary Herald building. But few know that behind the iconic structure lies the thriving residential community of Mayland Heights.

Originally named Crossroads, the community was annexed to the city of Calgary in 1910, long before shovels hit the dirt to carve the two super highways that now bind it. Here you can find local clothing designs, loads of vinyl and good local eats. Many of the venues pair up unlikely offerings, making the vibe even quirkier. Enjoy an old-fashioned shave while sipping on a vodka martini at barbershop/cocktail lounge Cannibale, or grab one of the best coffees in town at Lukes Drug Mart.

When it comes to housing, the northeast riverside community of Bridgeland and its under-the-radar neighbour Renfrew offer loads of diversity. Both communities feature everything from wartime bungalows and mid-century character homes to modern infills and innovative condo projects.

While it is not uncommon for a developer to stay busy in an area where it has had success, Bucci Developments has truly made itself at home in Bridgeland.

The B.C.-based developer is presently constructing its fifth residential project since 2006 in the historic north-Calgary neighbourhood.

Since the demolition of the Calgary General Hospital 21 years ago, the northeast neighbourhood of Bridgeland has undergone a massive transformation. In fact, that transformation is ongoing and will intensify over the next three years, as one of Calgary's oldest communities continues to reinvent itself.
