In Calgary, gardening success starts with healthy soil

As spring approaches, thoughts turn to mucking about in the soil – preparing a garden that could eventually provide colourful blooms and delicious produce to perk up our winter-wearied spirits.

However, getting there isn't always as easy as one, two, three.

HGTV Canada star Todd Talbot explores the financial side of real estate at the Calgary Home + Garden Show

Known for his quirky sense of humour and dapper style, real estate guru and co-host of HGTV Canada's Love It or List It Vancouver Todd Talbot will be hitting the Main Stage at the Calgary Home + Garden Show this weekend to dish out a dollop of valuable real estate know how.

Love It or List It Vancouver’s Todd Talbot draws heavily on his own homebuying experiences during his Calgary Home and Garden Show presentation on “right sizing.” According to Talbot, right-sizing requires homeowners to do an honest audit of what is important to them when it comes to their living space.

The road to right-sizing

HGTV star Todd Talbot shares advice from 20 years in real estate at the Calgary Home and Garden Show

At the age of 22, Vancouver actor Todd Talbot bought his first home, paying his mortgage with the help of a rent-paying friend.

It was a unique occurrence among his theatre colleagues.

"(As an actor) you don't make a ton of money and you are pretty transient," said Talbot, who, as a teenager, appeared on the Hillside TV series with fellow Vancouverite and current Hollywood heavyweight Ryan Reynolds.

However, it was this initial foray into real estate – $190,000 for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo two blocks from Kitsilano Beach – that sparked Talbot's second career as an entrepreneur, leveraging one piece of property for another, and then another, and eventually leading to ownership of several real estate companies.

Colour your world

Interior design experts set to hit the Home + Garden stage in March

Tiffany Pratt loves colour.

An interior designer, stylist and host of HGTV Canada's Home to Win and Buy It, Fix It, Sell It, she's also a self-proclaimed "rainbow hunter" and "rainbow thrower." Even her vibrantly hued hair, which takes inspiration from the rainbow, attests to her passion for palettes.

It's no surprise, then, that colour will take centre stage when Pratt makes her debut at this year's Calgary Home + Garden Show.

One of the trends to be explored at the Renovation Runway will be the strong influence of Nordic design, whether it be through Scandinavian wallpaper, lighting, or the kind of hardwood used. Photo courtesy Wicket Blue Interiors.

Rebranded Calgary Renovation Show to feature what's hot for 2017

New Year's resolutions are almost as inevitable as the New Year itself. And if those resolutions include home renovation projects, then the Calgary Renovation Show is here to help.

Previously known as the Calgary Homexpo, the rebranded show returns to Calgary for its 46th year Jan 13 to 15, 2017, but with a new name, new look and new presenter – Marketplace Events, the group behind the Calgary Home + Design Show and Calgary Home + Garden Show.

"The all-new Calgary Renovation Show focuses on reimagining your current space," courtesy of some 200 exhibitors related to the latest in home and renovation trends and products, as well as a variety of guest presenters, said show manager Teri Salazar.
