The 1½-storey, Arts and Crafts-style Walter Hargrave Residence is unique for a couple of reason. Constructed in 1913, it is one of the oldest buildings in the northwest community of Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill, a neighbourhood whose founding dates back to before the First World War.

Historical Home Spotlight: R. B. Bennett House

Year of Construction: 1912

Address: 802 Prospect Ave. S.W.

Community: Upper Mount Royal

Architectural Style: Georgian Revival

Oddly enough, the most famous owner of this stately brick home in Calgary's upscale Mount Royal neighbourhood never actually lived there. As the house's modern moniker suggests, that owner was R. B. Bennett, Canada's 11th prime minister and a man who, despite growing up in New Brunswick and spending his final years in England, is indelibly linked with Calgary's history.

Railroad ties: Ramsay and Ogden are connected by rich railway history

At first glance, the southeast communities of Ramsay and Ogden may seem as though they have nothing in common. Ramsay is an up-and-coming, inner-city, hipster hangout, while Ogden conjures images of a more family-centric, suburban lifestyle. However, these communities are threaded together by a common denominator that weaves through the city's landscape and is steeped in rich history – the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR).

Community Profile: historic Tuxedo Park is full of friendly neighbours and fresh ideas

With its diverse mix of housing types, rich history and close proximity to Calgary's core, Tuxedo Park is rapidly transforming into a thriving community of hip, young families.

"There are so many young families in the neighbourhood. And I've met so many new people, just by walking around the community with my baby in his stroller," said Anne Johnson, president of the Tuxedo Park Community Association.

Community Profile: Bowness and Montgomery

There is something special about living close to the river – waking up in the morning to the sounds of water swishing along the banks and birds singing their morning symphony.

It's that sense of getting away from it all that is attracting people to the riverside communities of Bowness and Montgomery. Both communities boast a deep and storied history – originating as villages and then towns before being amalgamated into the city – which led to the development of a distinctive flavour and culture that is still visible today.

According to Twitter user @OddPittsburgh, this "Pittsburgh Potty" photo dates back to 1922.

Plumbing the depths of history: why some old homes have a random basement toilet

Old homes are often full of outdated features that seem bizarre in a modern context but served an important purpose at the time of construction. With some of these quirks – such as milk doors, dumbwaiters and boot scrapers – the utility is obvious. With others... well, not so much.

A beautiful ride: two local REALTORS® reflect on 50 years in real estate

Calgary-area REALTORS® Herb Styles and Ray Pfob are celebrating 50 years in the business this year – an impressive milestone by any measure.

Both entered the industry somewhat by happenstance, but five decades later, neither man would trade his time in real estate – including all the stories and bits of wisdom collected along the way – for anything.
