Illuminate Gala to Cast Spotlight on Local Philanthropists

In keeping with the Ronald McDonald House's focus on helping others, the organization will soon be shining a light on those who've helped them achieve their goals over the last year.

Taking place March 8, the 2nd Annual Illuminate Gala will spotlight the importance of community by highlighting two inspirational philanthropists to the Calgary and Ronald McDonald House communities. "We operate based on donations from individuals and groups, so we're highly dependent on donations," said Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta executive director Larry Mathieson. "So we like this event to be a recognition of some of those donors and supporters so it is a night that we can get together and celebrate."

Being honoured as part of this year's gala is CREB®'s own Charitable Foundation. In 2013, as part of the foundation's commitment to shelter-related needs and initiatives, a $25,000 donation was made to Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta.

The donation assisted Ronald McDonald House in providing home away from home for out-of-town families with sick children receiving medical attention in a Calgary hospital. Since opening in 1985, the house has seen more than 18,000 visits. The Calgary House with all its supports and programs costs about $3.1 million a year to run. McDonalds and their charity supports about five per cent of the operating costs each year the rest is covered by the generosity of individuals and companies in Calgary.

One of 14 Houses across Canada and one of over 300 around the world, Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta can accommodate up to 23 families, each with their own suite and private bath, while sharing kitchen facilities and common areas. Although occupancy is not based on financial need, a nightly fee is purposely kept at a low rate to make it an affordable option for all families wanting to be close to their ill family member.
