The City of Calgary is bringing Calgarians together with new public spaces
As part of its vision to make Calgary a great place to make a living, the City is creating new areas where communities can gather to learn and play. Here’s a little more about them:
New spaces
Rocky Ridge Athletic Complex
The community of Rocky Ridge has welcomed a new athletic park that features two new outdoor, multi-use artificial turf fields that allow Calgarians to play soccer for additional months.
Its companion, the Rocky Ridge Fieldhouse (an indoor recreation facility), will support sports and community activities with a FIFA-standard field.
Northeast Athletic Complex
Located in the community of Saddle Ridge, this community hub will feature Calgary’s first cricket pitch, designed to host competition at the local, regional and national level. Additionally, this sport space will boast four outdoor multi-sport fields and a 162,500-square-foot indoor fieldhouse.
Symons Valley Centre Library
Expected to open in mid-2028, the 15,000-square-foot facility library will be accompanied by an underground and surface parking for the library. It will also feature a commons green space and a multimodal main street that will improve access throughout the site and primarily serve the residents of the Kincora, Sherwood, Sage Hill, Nolan Hill and Evanston communities.
This project is also part of a larger community hub that will eventually include a transit terminal, housing and shops, bringing a growing community together.
Belmont Fieldhouse and Library
With a 118,000-square-foot fieldhouse and a 10,000-square-foot library, residents of Belmont and nearby communities will have an optimal space for recreation, learning and connection. The fieldhouse and library are the first part of the Belmont Civic Site. It is set to be completed in Q2 of 2027.
Upgrades to existing spaces
Munro Park
Located in the Winston Heights Mountview neighbourhood, Munro Park will now have a natural play zone, a community plaza, a three-on-three basketball court and effective rainwater-powered gardens that clean water and create habitats for birds, bugs and butterflies.
Chinese Market Gardens at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
In honour of the Chinese families who once farmed the land and helped feed Calgary’s growing population, the market gardens have been upgraded with new pathways, the addition of native plants and interpretive features that will allow visitors to connect with local history while enjoying one of Calgary’s most loved natural spaces.
