Community Profile: Scenic Acres and Silver Springs

Fringing the Bow River Valley with stunning views of the Rockies, the neighbouring northwest communities of Scenic Acres and Silver Springs offer a connected lifestyle in an established area.

"Once people move here, they don't want to leave," said Ruth Sorrentino, general manager of the Scenic Acres Community Association.

Sorrentino has lived in the community for almost 14 years and says that many of her neighbours have been there 20 years or more – some since the community's inception in the early 1980s.

While Silver Springs was developed a decade earlier, it was also officially established in the early '80s.

Both Scenic Acres and Silver Springs boast nature on their doorstep, much of it with river access, including three public parks.

Sorrentino says one of the most attractive features of the natural space is the ravine that overlooks the river and the pathways that wind through it, as well as the "breathtaking views of Paskapoo Slopes and the mountains to the west."

In Silver Springs and Scenic Acres, the streets are lined with both new builds and older homes in the throes of renovations, as single-family dwellings represent almost 90 per cent of the housing across the two communities.

However, with a few new multi-unit projects in the works – including a retirement residence by Revera and a future 183-unit, eight-storey, multi-family project designed by IBI Group located at the intersection of Nose Hill Drive and 85th Street N.W. – there will be lots of opportunities for area residents to downsize into retirement.

Fun Fact
Thanks to the diligent efforts of future homeowners, the support of hundreds of volunteers, and the generosity of funding partners like the CREB® Charitable Foundation and the Calgary Foundation, Habitat for Humanity will complete the first phase of Silvercreek – a $9-million, 32-unit townhome project in Silver Springs – in late 2019.
