Langdon: Beautiful scenery and Western heritage are fuelling growth in this charming hamlet

One of Rocky View County's best-kept secrets, the picturesque hamlet of Langdon is starting to turn heads, as its wide-open spaces and country charm place it firmly in the spotlight.

Inspiring views, rich Western heritage (it was founded nearly 150 years ago), a charming main street, more than 100 acres of parks and open spaces, and proximity to McKinnon Flats and the Bow River are putting this community 20 minutes east of Calgary on the radar.

The town has served as inspiration for artist McKenna Prather, who grew up in Langdon. She is this year's Stampede Rotary Dream Home artist, and more than 40 of her works are featured in this year's Homes by Avi creation that will be on display at Stampede Park throughout the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

"I'm really influenced by the Alberta landscape," said Prather. "And Langdon is just so beautiful."

Even though this recent graduate of the Alberta University of the Arts (formerly the Alberta College of Art and Design) now lives in Calgary, she still heads to Langdon on the weekends to reconnect with her roots.

Langdon's population has increased almost 10 per cent over the past five years. Now, almost 5,400 people call it home and many say that community spirit is at its heart.

Langdon's logo is an upside-down horseshoe, reflective of its tagline: "The Good Luck Town."

The new community of Boulder Creek Estates has recently changed the face of the hamlet, adding estate-style housing by Stepper Homes and Broadview Homes to the mix, along with an 18-hole championship golf course. Homes grace oversized lots, some stretching to
72 feet of frontage, and most homes have three- or four-car garages.

As interest in the rural lifestyle continues to grow, more new communities are slated for development.

Designed by Qualico Communities, Painted Sky is set to launch in early 2020. Although most of the details are still under wraps, Qualico's marketing co-ordinator, Laura Field, says the subdivision application has been submitted for approval and the company is working with engineering consultants on the community.

"We anticipate ground work to begin in late 2019, early 2020," she said.

Painted Sky will cover 272 acres on the west side of Langdon, south of Glenmore Trail and east of Range Road 273.
