Rolling out the red carpet: a hypothetical exercise in royal resettlement

After the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they planned to call Canada home, Okotoks town council passed a resolution inviting the royal couple to settle in their town.

Since then, however, a viral pandemic and a change of heart on the part of the couple – they are reportedly quarantining in California and have shifted their sights to finding a new home in Malibu – seem to have scuttled the possibility of the royals settling in the Great White North any time soon.

Yet, with all the attractive properties in the Calgary area, the possibilities for Harry and Meghan would have been endless.

"I would recommend one of the many mountain view and water properties near Calgary," said Mary ann Turrie, a real estate associate at RE/MAX Real Estate Mountain View who specializes in luxury residential sales.

"I think they would appreciate a treed property for privacy, beach access, and room for a guest house for Meghan's mother and extended family."

As one of the top three postal codes in Canada for homeowner wealth, Springbank could have been a natural fit for the couple. The area will soon be adding a Nordic spa that could have accommodated the pair's visitors in the lap of luxury.

Another option they could have explored is Churches Ranches, a highly coveted acreage community in Bearspaw, mere minutes northwest of Calgary's city limits.

"I like Churches Ranches for the manmade lakes, 40 acres of bike paths, great wildlife and many view properties," said Turrie.

Location is especially important for the couple. Proximity to Banff would offer the ideal outlet for weekend outings. Also, having a hospital and emergency services nearby would provide peace of mind regarding baby Archie.

Given that Harry is a proud supporter of many foundations in memory of his mother, Turrie would encourage her office to consider adding a foundation to their roster in honour of the duke and duchess. She also touts the outstanding Calgary Police Service for their ability to offer protection, as well as the respectful nature of Calgarians, which would keep paparazzi intrusions to a minimum.

If all that wasn't enticing enough, Turrie would pique the duo's interest with an exclusive offering.

"I know a hidden pocket of land that is minutes from Calgary," she said. "It overlooks a lake and golf course, and has a beautiful stone residence that they could renovate to their liking, complete with additional guest suite."
