Community Profile: Redwood Meadows

Perched at the junction of Highways 8 and 22X with a beautiful mountain backdrop, the townsite of Redwood Meadows is attracting young families who want to get away from it all, while staying close enough to the city for a quick commute.

"It's very social and very friendly here. I know it sounds cliché, but you know your neighbours," said resident Mike Decore, who moved to the area three years ago and commutes to an office in downtown Calgary.

"When we first moved in, I jokingly asked my wife, 'have we moved into a commune?' because there were kids always around. Between our house and five doors down, there are 23 kids between the ages of two and 10."

The couple, who have two young boys aged three and six, purchased a six-bedroom, 2,800-square-foot home.

Redwood Meadows is located just minutes from Bragg Creek on the Tsuut'ina First Nation. The townsite has just over 1,000 residents living in 354 single-family homes.

Owners purchase their homes, but the land is leased from the Tsuut'ina.

"We don't pay a fee to lease – we pay municipal taxes, but that's it," said Decore, who is also a town councillor.

The lease is set to expire in 2049. Without a new lease or an extension in place, that could mean challenges for homeowners and buyers.

But Decore says that won't happen. "We've been in negotiations for the better part of a year. We can see the finish line," he said.

"We hope to have the framework agreement done and everything signed by the fall of 2019."
